What is a baby rash guard?

A baby rash guard is an athletic shirt that protects your baby's delicate skin from the sun's harmful UV rays and prevents chafing caused by sand, salt water, or other irritants. Baby rash guards are made from lightweight, stretchy materials (polyester and nylon blends) that wick moisture away from the skin, keeping your little one cool and comfortable.

Our one-piece rash guards come in different styles, including short-sleeve and long-sleeve options, and they feature a UPF rating of 50+ for extra sun protection. They provide excellent coverage for your baby's upper body and can be worn alone or layered on top of a one-piece swimsuit.

Made originally for surfing, rash guards have become popular among parents looking for swimwear that is easy to throw on and offers full-body sun coverage.

Baby rash guard shirts pair perfectly with swim trunks, bikini bottoms, or even cozy cloth shorts. Whether your baby is learning to swim or spending a weekend with grandparents, SwimZip baby rash guards protect their delicate skin from the sun's damaging UV rays. Our collection includes a variety of styles, colors, and sizes to suit every sun-loving baby.

What is UPF?

Ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) is a rating system that measures a fabric's ability to block UV rays from reaching the skin. UPF ratings range from 15 to 50+, with higher numbers indicating greater protection.

Fabrics with a UPF rating of 50+ block at least 98% of UV rays, while those with a rating of 30 block about 96.7%. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing clothing with a UPF rating of 30 or higher for optimal sun protection.

All our baby rash guards and sun-protective swimwear feature UPF 50+ fabric, which offers the highest level of protection available. This tight-weave, stretchy fabric allows less than 2% of UV radiation to pass through, which significantly reduces the risk of sunburn, sun poisoning, and skin damage for your baby's delicate skin.

Why is sun protection important?

Sun protection is important for babies, as their delicate skin is very vulnerable to the harmful effects of UV rays. Babies have thinner, more sensitive skin than adults, and are more susceptible to sunburns and skin damage. A baby's skin also has less melanin, the pigment that provides some natural protection against UV rays.

Overexposure to the sun's UV rays can lead to painful sunburns, skin irritation, and even heat exhaustion in babies. In the long term, excessive sun exposure during childhood can significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancer later in life.

To protect your baby from the sun's harmful rays, use a combination of sun protection measures:

  • Dress your baby in protective clothing, such as long-sleeve baby rash guards and wide-brimmed hats
  • Keep your baby in the shade, especially during peak sun hours (10 am to 4 pm)
  • Apply a baby-safe, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to exposed skin
  • Regularly hydrate your baby to prevent heat exhaustion

Long-sleeve rash guards for babies

From solid colors to colorful designs, our collection of long-sleeve baby rash guards offers styles to suit every taste. These rash guards provide extra sun protection by covering your baby's arms, shoulders, and upper back, which are often exposed to the sun.

Choose from adorable designs, including:

  • Classic solid colors like navy, white, and pink
  • Playful patterns such as polka dots, stripes, and tropical prints
  • Cute graphics featuring marine life, beach themes, and more

Many of our long-sleeve baby rash guards feature a front zipper, making them easy to put on and take off, even with a wriggly baby. The zipper also allows for ventilation and temperature control, ensuring your baby stays comfortable throughout the day.

Short-sleeve rash guards for babies

Our short-sleeve baby rash guards are perfect for little ones who prefer more freedom of movement or for slightly warmer weather. These rash guards provide excellent sun protection for your baby's torso, while still allowing their arms to breathe and move freely.

Our short-sleeve baby rash guards come in a variety of colors and patterns, including:

  • Bright, solid colors like red, yellow, and turquoise
  • Fun, summery prints such as flamingos, pineapples, and beach umbrellas
  • Unique designs that showcase your baby's personality

Many of our short-sleeve baby rash guards feature a snap closure at the neck, making them easy to put on and take off. This feature also ensures a secure, comfortable fit that won't irritate your baby's delicate skin.

Short-sleeve baby rash guards are versatile and can be worn on their own or paired with our baby swimsuits, swim shorts, or even regular shorts for a day out in the sun. They're perfect for beach trips, pool parties, or just playing in the backyard sprinkler.

What materials are used in your baby rash guards?

Our baby rash guards are made from soft, comfortable materials that are gentle on your little one's delicate skin. We use a high-quality blend of nylon and spandex that is breathable, quick-drying, and saltwater-resistant, ensuring your baby stays comfortable and protected during long days at the beach or pool.

Do you offer different sizes in your baby swimwear collection?

We offer a wide range of sizes in our baby and toddler swimwear collection. Our swimwear is available in sizes ranging from 0-24 months, ensuring you can find the perfect fit for your little one. We also offer detailed size charts to help you choose the right size based on your baby's weight and height.

Are your baby rash guards suitable for active babies?

Our baby rash guards are great for active babies. The stretchy, flexible material offers an unrestricted range of motion, so your little one can crawl, splash, and explore to their heart's content.

The UPF 50+ sun protection also means your baby can safely enjoy longer periods of outdoor play without the risk of sunburn or skin damage.

Baby rash guards FAQ

Should babies wear rash guards?

Babies should wear rash guards for maximum sun protection. Our baby rash guards, especially long-sleeve ones, provide excellent coverage for your baby's delicate skin, shielding it from harmful UV rays. They are made from lightweight, stretchy fabric with a UPF 50+ rating, offering the highest level of sun protection available.

Does a baby need sunscreen under their rash guard?

Even the best UV protective fabric will still allow a small percentage of UV rays to pass through, so putting sunscreen on under a rash guard isn't a bad idea. Choose a baby-safe, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply every 2 hours or after swimming.

When can you take a baby swimming?

Babies can start swimming as early as 2 months old, as long as they have had their first round of immunizations and are healthy. Keep swimming sessions short (10-15 minutes) and ensure the water is warm enough (around 90°F) to prevent hypothermia in young babies.

Can a 6-month-old baby go to a chlorine pool?

A 6-month-old baby can go to a chlorine pool, but it's important to take some precautions. Make sure the pool is well-maintained and the chlorine levels are within the recommended range. Limit the time spent in the pool and rinse your baby off with clean water after swimming to remove any chlorine residue.

Can babies swim in just swim diapers?

While swim diapers can contain solid waste, they are not a substitute for proper swimwear. Babies should wear a swim diaper underneath a well-fitting baby swimsuit or baby rash guard to ensure maximum sun protection and to prevent any accidental leaks.

What type of swimsuit is best for 0-24 months old kids?

For babies and toddlers aged 0-24 months, the best type of swimsuit is a one-piece rashguard swimsuit with UPF 50+ sun protection. These swimsuits provide full coverage for your baby's delicate skin, while still allowing for easy diaper changes and freedom of movement. Look for swimsuits with snaps or zippers for easy dressing.

Do babies need sunsuits?

Babies need sunsuits for maximum sun protection. Sunsuits shield your baby's delicate skin from harmful UV rays. They are made from lightweight, stretchy fabric with a UPF 50+ rating and provide full coverage for your baby's torso, arms, and sometimes legs, depending on the style.

How can I keep my baby comfortable during a beach day?

To keep your baby comfortable during a beach day, dress them in lightweight, breathable clothing like a baby rash guard and a wide-brimmed hat. Provide plenty of shade with a beach umbrella or a pop-up tent, and make sure your baby stays hydrated by offering water or nursing frequently. Apply baby-safe sunscreen regularly and limit time in direct sunlight, especially during peak hours.
