Sun Safe Tips and Tricks for Your Family by SwimZip

Family sun safety is increasingly important as doctors find stronger and stronger links between sun exposure and skin cancer, so here are some helpful sun safe tips and tricks!

Whether you're out for a run or chasing your little's around outside, it's important to take a moment and protect YOUR skin, too!

How many times have you packed your beach bags and realized you forgot sun protection for yourself? I'm guilty! I get so worried about making sure the kids don't burn, that I sometimes forget about my delicate skin and the reality and risks of skin cancer.

Here are a few tips to avoid this mistake!

    1) Pre-pack.
Try to avoid packing your bags just before heading out the door. The night before your outing, take five minutes and toss your UV Safe SwimZip into your bag. Include some of your favorite sunscreen, lip balm, a bottle of water and a wide brim sun hat so that you're comfortable all afternoon. I put my SwimZip on over my swimsuit or unzipped over a t-shirt when I know I'll be in the sun for a while. These are great to pack for hiking and camping!

    2) Apply Sunscreen Prior to Leaving the House.
If you're a parent or guardian--try this trick! Right after morning showers/bath time, apply your favorite sunscreen to your little's face's, necks, hands and legs, then get them dressed once its dry. Be sure they are wearing UV Safe attire before sending them off to play outside or before loading them into the car for an outing. This has prevented many tantrums during outings, in our experience. Re-apply a little once you're there and voila! No more sandy, sticky babies.

    3) Use a Face Lotion That Includes Sunscreen.
One trick that keeps me from burning during long afternoons at the ball park, is having SPF facial lotion which I apply before leaving the house. Even SPF 15 can make the difference between pink splotchy skin and a healthy glow. Keep your skin protected!

    4) Remind Yourself That It Only Takes One Burn.
It only takes one burn to cause skin cancer. Before heading out the door, consider the time of day, the weather, and the length of time you'll be in the sun. The more time spent outdoors, means the more coverage you'll need. It only takes one burn to ruin a wonderful vacation or outing with family!

    5) Drink Lots of Water!
I'm also guilty of forgetting snacks and water for myself. When mama is happy, everyone's happy--so don't forget to pack a few snacks and a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated.

    6) Sun Hat's Are a Must.
We swear by Sun Hat's here at SwimZip. Our kid's swim sets offer quite a bit of coverage and we do have full-coverage suits which offer UV Protection from the neck to the wrist/ankle. That being said, the face is a whole other factor that must be addressed. Wide-brim sun hats help to keep their little face's and heads from burning. Their scalp is so sensitive. Please remember to protect their beautiful faces, too. They will thank you later.

    7) Beware of Beach Umbrellas!
Our pediatrician warned us that beach umbrellas are commonly used to shade people in an effort to prevent over exposure... but what can end up happening is the sun reflects down on the sand and the light bounces up into the umbrella, casting more direct UV rays back down onto your family! Yes, light moves like that. It bounces. Be sure to put a beach blanket down before using any sort of beach umbrella, or you may end up speeding up the burn process, unintentionally. Never set a child directly on the sand, under an umbrella--or you may be taking home one very cute, very red, lobster.

    8) Remember Your Shades.
I was never one to wear sunglasses on a daily bases until I learned more about what UV Rays can do to your vision. Did you know you can sunburn your eyeballs?! You can! Purchase shades with UV protection built into the lens. Make it a habit to bring them with you everywhere you go...and don't forget to keep them in the case to avoid scratches and breaks. Be careful about buying Polarized Lenses as they can cause dizziness. Go for UV Safe lenses and talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have regarding your vision.

    9) If You Burn...
Don't panic. Get to shade quickly and begin First-Aid. The heat will need to release from the skin, so be careful about slathering layers of cold aloe too soon. You don't want to trap the heat under your skin and further the damage. We've found that a luke warm shower, cool (not cold) compress, and lotion help to soothe the burn. Drink lots of water and rest. Stay out of the sun until the burn heals.

We hope you have a great spring and remember, you can absolutely burn when it's overcast outside--stay Sun Safe during day time hours. xoxo

Stay tuned for an awesome product launch this Wednesday that'll knock your socks off. :)

    Spring Fashion for Kids

Our goal at SwimZip is to keep your family safe from harmful UV rays, which means more fun in the sun! Our sizing starts at Newborn and extends to Pre-teen, Women's and Men's.

With a good sun hat, a little sunscreen, and a UV safe SwimZip, your adventures are no longer shortened by the risk of sunburn and overexposure.

This season is all about soft pastels and powder blue's. Here are a few favorite styles from our new line that are perfect for Spring 2015:

Pool Party Geo Print Girls Rashguard set.

This set has flown off the shelves since the day we opened our new line up for pre-sale. We can't seem to order enough!! With a little girly ruffle, high-fashion geo print, and a mix of eye catching pastels, we understand why it's been a first choice for girls all around the globe.

Ruffle Me Pretty in Mint Chip

Mint has been a major hit since we started SwimZip, so we decided to extend the color to a few other styles this season! Ruffle Me Pretty is now available in Pink and Mint Chip. There is something about mint... we cannot keep these on the shelves! The moment we stock them, they seem to sell out in a blink. Side note: We are working quickly to get everything restocked, so if you see a style you love which is sold out--it'll be right back, promise! The Ruffle Me Pretty in Mint set is perfect for your tinsy sweetheart.

    Lucky Stars SwimZip set.

We brought this design to both the girls and boys line and it has been a major hit for Spring 2015. This powder blue and grey set has fun detailing with it's racer stripe sleeve and white star print shorts!

    Hampton Getaway in Green

In the original line, we designed Hampton Getaway in yellow and it was a huge hit, so we decided to try it out in green and red--and we've been blown away at the response!! The green has been highly popular for boys this season. We know you'll love Hampton Getaway for Spring 2015.

Check out the rest of our new line on http://swimzip.com/ to see more of our latest styles. Our website has a new look and we've made it easier than ever to browse our swimwear, hats and rashguard sets!
